Anti-Silence

The necklace on her neck,

The watch on his wrist

The makeup, hair colour,

Length of her dress,

The sights, the sounds, the smells

Of chattering men and women

Expelling words like exhaust fumes

Idling their lives away at the curb

Lowering the sacred to the banal

Newspapers read with feverish boredom

Coffee injected, not enjoyed

Opinions offered, never heard

Manufactured importance, no meaning

Empty jobs, empty eyes

Faded tattoos, forgotten reasons

Raised voices signal raised egos

Always professing, never asking
